About us

The Baniwa family carries in its tradition the art of artisanal basketry made from Arumã fiber. Techniques are passed down from generation to generation, and collectively they make this art their livelihood. Today, the family lives in the city due to the expropriation of their indigenous territory and relies on neighbors, landowners, to harvest the necessary raw materials to weave their pieces with excellence. The process occurs in weekly cycles of harvesting, processing, and production, always respecting the laws of nature for fiber extraction. Currently, Marlene, the organizer of the activities, is also responsible for the entire sales process and shipment of the pieces via courier throughout Brazil. There are many challenges faced due to distance, lack of access to transportation, manual planning and accounting, and the initial formalization process in which the group finds itself. Today, other families also collaborate in the production of artisanal basketry.

Objectives

Through their work in recent years, the Baniwa family has managed to purchase a rural property, where they intend to collectively relocate. They aim to plant their own Arumã, reclaim their ancestry, and perhaps one day, welcome visitors who wish to learn from their culture and art.
